Your Consultation Guide

The consultation is a fact-finding mission and is the first part of the service you give your clients. An in-depth consultation will allow you find out what their needs and expectations are. Spending an extra 5 minutes of one on one time can make all the difference in the world. A thorough and informative session with your prospective client will help you to make the right recommendations and provide a peace of mind. The primary purpose of a consultation is to identify the needs of your client and establish a stable client/clinician relationship.

During the consultation, you get to know your client on a one on one basis. You have to remember that everyone that walks through your door is different, so be sure to treat everyone like a snowflake, no two are alike. During the consultation, you have to take in consideration these five key factors; client’s skin type, the location of the tattoo, amount of ink in the tattoo, lifestyle and medication/medical history.

The consultation is your opportunity be as honest and transparent as possible; we cannot stress how imperative it is to provide an educational consultation without leaving out any important steps of the tattoo removal process. By doing this, you will create a stronger relationship between the client and technician. You want to be realistic with the expectations. Never promise “full removal” when it comes to tattoo removal. There are so many differentiating factors in the process of laser tattoo removal there is no way we can make promises to anyone. You must explain that everyone runs a different immune system and will have different outcomes. The average number of treatments is 8-10 spaced 4, 6, or 8 weeks apart and some clients will digest the ink faster than others. Some may take less than 8 treatments; some can take more than 10 treatments to remove. It all depends on how your body will digest the ink.

The process itself is very easy. The laser is attracted to the ink and when it comes in contact with it, it shatters the ink molecules into smaller molecules which your body can actually digest. From there your body does all the work! Tattoos are a foreign object to the body, so your immune system wants it out regardless, we are just speeding up the process by shattering the ink particles into smaller pieces, which triggers the immune system to do its thing.

As far as aftercare, we keep it simple. Nothing on it, except if you’re going to be out in the sun. Make sure you apply sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF every 2-3 hours on the area. Other than that, nothing on it. Let your body recognize it and do the healing for you.

Like any other industry, there is the good side and the ugly side of laser tattoo removal. Many clinics will claim they are the best of the best in the business. Some may even have old technology that is 10+ years old and claim they are the best. Some technicians will say that bleeding and blisters are signs of a proper treatment. Many of these clinics are dishonest and make promises they can’t meet. Someone who is serious about tattoo removal will do their proper research dig deep to decipher the competent clinics from the less than reputable ones. Laser tattoo removal is a tricky industry, many are just focused on the bottom line and do not take the time to get proper education and training for the sake and safety of the client. A reputable, trustworthy clinic will have an excellent website full of their own before and after photos, testimonials, reviews, pictures of the clinic, etc. After doing research on the web, the client will usually schedule a consultation with various establishments they have narrowed down which qualifications meet what they are looking for. As a business owner or even as a technician you have to understand that you are not the only option in your area for tattoo removal so you must be able to communicate what sets you apart from the other options appropriately.
